SensorLab Student Grants (Fall 2022/Spring 2023)

The Healthcare Technology Innovation Lab – SensorLab – a new flexible space configured for a variety of projects, including XR studies, wearable sensor development, closed-loop sensing studies, and group dynamics studies is pleased to announce the SensorLab Student Grants.

The SensorLab Student Grants are designed to support “sensor-based” research, by either supporting new research using sensors, or to augment current research through the addition of sensors. Projects should utilize SensorLab equipment and facilities (for more information please visit These grants aim to support student experiential research (Strategic Pillar 1: The Wildcat Journey – Driving Student Success for a Rapidly Changing World) and conduct of sensor-based studies that have the potential to catalyze new extramural research and build new collaborations.

The award will support one-half (0.25 FTE) of a Graduate Research Assistantship, (including salary, ERE tuition remission) during the academic year (Fall 2022 to Spring 2023), and (optionally) one undergraduate research assistant for up to 15 hours/week, and additional equipment/sensors specific to the project to be used in SensorLab. The student’s mentor is expected to provide the other one-half of the graduate assistantship. All equipment/sensors will remain part of SensorLab equipment inventory after the completion of the project.


1. Expected Outcomes: SensorLab Student awards aim to support student-involved research with a clear and integrated use of SensorLab infrastructure, team, and equipment. The proposed research should also function as seed fund/pilot initiative to acquire larger, high impact external support.


2. Eligibility: At least one member of the applicant team must have Principal Investigator status per UA guidelines. Teams may include one or more mentors, one graduate student and optionally one undergraduate student. Projects must use existing SensorLab equipment and facilities, and/or request additional equipment funds for the proposed research. Preference will be given to proponents not previously awarded any Sensorlab grants (SeedGrants, Student Grants or Sabbatical Faculty grants)


3. Other Program Details

        a. Proposal-Related Information: SensorLab Student proposals must be submitted by e-mail as a single PDF to and by 5:00 PM on August 5, 2022. See below for other proposal and submission requirements. Review and award/decline decisions are anticipated to be completed in late December.

        b. Reporting Requirements: Within one month of an award’s end date, the PI must submit a final report via e-mail as a PDF file. The report will describe activities performed and success in meeting project milestones, and progress towards submitting an external grant.


4. Review and Selection Processes: Reviewers will consider the qualifications of the team members. The following criteria will also be considered:

        o The proposed research leverages SensorLab capabilities, promotes innovative usage of the SensorLab infrastructure/equipment, and presents potential for development of new technologies/applications;

        o The student(s) who will participate in the project are identified and pre-selected. Strong preference will be given to proposals that nominate students already working in research projects with the PI. Needed equipment/sensors can be procured in a timeframe that will not delay completion of the proposed effort.

        o The proposed research will advance the student’s skills, leadership, and training

        o The proposed approach, including research questions and methods, is sound

        o Completion of the proposed milestones will position the PI, the SensorLab, and UArizona to competitively pursue external grants.

        Selection will be based on review recommendations and alignment with University strategic plans.


5. Application and Submission Instructions: Proposals must be submitted in PDF form by e-mail (to and ( by 5:00 PM on August 5, 2022.

        a. Two-Page Project Narrative

                o Summary of short- and long-term research milestones revealing a specific strategy for including the Sensorlab as key part of the current and future research, and as a contributing factor to securing external funding via grants or industry agreements.

                o Proposed activities corresponding to each milestone

                o Discussion of at least one extramural funding opportunity: Include a link to the RFA/RFP/solicitation (or program if the solicitation is not yet available). Give the grant/program title, agency name, and submission deadline, and/or industry/private foundation funding priorities.

                o References (included within the two-page limit)


        b. PI’s CV or agency-specific biographical sketch (students’ CV – optional but highly encouraged)

        c. Budget and budget justification for costs from among these options:

              • Up to .25 FTE GRA with ERE (Fall 2022 to Spring 2023)

              • One-half Tuition remission

              • SensorLab equipment specific for the proposed research (up to $10,000; higher values only with extraordinary justification)

              • One undergraduate assistant (up to 15 hours/week for 32 weeks)


        The budget and business justification must be evaluated by the business manager/accountant of the proponents’ department/unit PRIOR to submission to ensure that the budget includes all necessary costs (e.g., ERE, tax, shipping, etc.) .
